Our Region
The East Central Florida Regional Planning Council district includes six counties: Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia.
The Central Florida Region has 119 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, significant amounts of sensitive environmental lands, critical ecosystems and strategic habitats. St Johns River runs through both Volusia and Brevard county, it is surrounded by a natural environment that is biologically diverse and environmentally important. There is also the Wekiva ecosystem, the Lake Toho and Lake Okeechobee sensitive areas, to name a few that are in our area. We have a growing cluster of ocean and coastal research and technology facilities including Dynamac Corp, Florida Institute of Technology, Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation and many more.
Environmental resources such as water, wetlands, sensitive lands and recreation space are a large part of our six county district. We try to incorporate these with our growing population and tourist visitors. Tourism is one of the largest sectors of the central Florida economy and Orange County is the mecca of world famous attractions such as Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World and many more making it a premier destination.
Population growth in East Central Florida is one of the fastest growing in the state. In February of 2007, Florida Trend Magazine reported that 1,000 people move to Florida daily.
With all this in mind you can imagine that balance between transportation, the environment, housing and the demands of consumers is a very fine line. It is our job to make sure that we grow and develop in a sustainable and suitable way so that our outlook for the future can be brighter and greener.
